Deja vu for Wings in postseason

By Tom Hoffman
For the second consecutive postseason, the Philadelphia Wings saw their hopes for a 7th indoor lacrosse title end at the hands of the Rochester Knighthawks.  Unlike last season when the Wings used a late flurry of goals to make the score close they played the type of game they needed to play against Rochester, one of solid defense.  Except this year the Wings could’ve used the late scoring as the sticks fell silent in the final stanza and Rochester got just enough offense to take a 10-8 decision in Saturday’s National Lacrosse League Eastern Division Semi Final at Blue Cross Arena.
For the Wings it was yet another slow start as Rochester jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 15 minutes.  The Philly offense came alive in the 2nd quarter scoring four of the next five goals to tie the game at four apiece.  Former Wing Dan Dawson would give the Knighthawks a 6-4 halftime lead with his third and fourth goals of the half.  The third quarter saw the Wings Kevin Crowley outscore Rochester 2-1 setting up Brendan Mundorf’s game tying goal just 21 seconds into the final quarter.  The Wings could not, however, get that go ahead goal and with 10 seconds left in a cross checking penalty to Ned Crotty Rochester would take the lead for good as Craig Point hit for the extra man goal.  Goals by Paul Dawson and Mike Accursi were the final blows though Jeff Reynolds added the final score of the season for the Wings with seven seconds left to play.
For the Wings it was a disappointing end to a season that started with some promise and a 2-0 start.  And now they embark on another offseason of trying to figure out how to rejoin the NLL elite after losing their fourth straight playoff game since winning the 2001 NLL Championship.

In addition to the Wings-Rochester matchup, three more games take place this weekend to open the 2013 National Lacrosse League playoffs.  Here is a look at these games.

Edmonton Rush at Washington Stealth

7:30 PM April 27 at Comcast Arena (CBS Sports Network)
Regular Season: Edmonton won the season series 2-1.

Playoff History: The teams met once in 2010 with Washington defeating the Rush 12-11 in overtime.
Team Leaders

Edmonton: Goals – Mark Matthews (38), Assists – Ryan Ward (54), Points – Ward (75), Goals Against Avg. – Aaron Bold (10.56).
Washington: Goals – Rhys Duch (45), Assists – Duch (51), Points – Duch (96), Goals against Avg. – Tyler Richards (10.92).

X-Factors: Edmonton went 7-1 on the road during the regular season and gave up the second fewest goals (170) in the NLL in 2013 (Rochester - 165).  The addition of Mark Matthews helped the Rush to the third most goals (203) scored this season (Calgary - 222 and Minnesota - 219). Rhys Duch had career highs in goals and points but the Stealth will need Lewis Ratcliff and Athan Iannucci to rebound from sub-par seasons.
Colorado Mammoth at Calgary Roughnecks

9 PM April 27 at Scotiabank Saddledome (You Tube/the Lacrosse Network)

Regular Season: Calgary won the season series 2-1.

Playoff History: The teams have met five times with Calgary holding a 4-1 advantage.  The last meeting was in 2011 with Calgary winning 10-6 at home.

Colorado: Goals – John Grant Jr. (43), Assists – Grant (48), Points – Grant (91), Goals against Avg. – Tye Belanger (10.77).

Calgary: Goals – Curtis Dickson (42), Assists – Shawn Evans (80), Points – Evans (112), Goals against Avg. – Mike Poulin (12.70).

X-Factors: Tye Belanger was 5-2 in goal for the Mammoth after Matt Roik, Chris Levis and Dan Lewis combined to go 2-7.  The Mammoth went 4-2 after the acquisition of Casey Powell.  Calgary led the NLL in goals scored (222) but was tied for last in goals against with Buffalo (211).

Minnesota Swarm at Toronto Rock

3 PM April 28 at Air Canada Centre (YouTube/the Lacrosse Network)

Regular Season: The teams split their two games, each team winning at home.

Toronto: Goals – Kasey Beirnes (31), Assists – Garrett Billings (70), Points – Billings (100), Goals against Avg. – Nick Rose (10.61).

X-Factors: The Swarm offense (2nd with 219 goals) against the Rock defense (3rd giving up 176 goals).  How much will the Swarm miss Andrew Suitor against a well balanced Toronto offense?

Wings punch playoff ticket with OT win

By Tom Hoffman

Heading into their game Saturday with the Toronto Rock, the Philadelphia Wings knew they needed to win or have the Buffalo Bandits lose to clinch a spot in the National Lacrosse League’s 2013 postseason.  Jordan Hall made sure that Wings fans would not have to stay up late to watch the Bandits in Washington against the Stealth when he scored his second goal of the day just 61 seconds into overtime to give the Wings a thrilling 10-9 victory over the Rock before 7,437 at Wells Fargo Center.

The game started as many have this season with the Rock taking a 2-0 lead on goals from Josh Sanderson.  Kevin Buchanan got the Wings on the board with 1:59 left in the first and Hall tied the game 54 seconds into the second quarter before the Rock added another pair of scores to go up 4-2.  The Wings kept themselves in the game as goals from Mike Manley and Buchanan tied the game at halftime.  Each side got a goal in the third quarter and the game would go to the final 15 of regulation even at five.

Just 21 seconds into the fourth the Wings took their first lead of the night courtesy of Paul Rabil.  Just as quickly though Toronto would tie and reclaim the lead when Blaine Manning and Sanderson tallied goals just 15 second apart.  Kyle Hartzell, off a feed from Ned Crotty, tied the game again before a breakaway goal by the Rock’s Damon Edwards put them back up at 8-7.  Kevin Crowley and Brendan Mundorf would give the Wings a 9-8 lead and the defense looked like they would be able to hold the one goal lead.  But with 1:12 left in regulation the Wings were called for too many men on the floor and as this occurred with under two minutes left in the game Toronto was awarded a penalty shot and Kasey Beirnes did not miss.  Neither team could score in the game’s final minute thus bringing on the extra time. After winning the faceoff the Rock were kept from scoring setting up the heroics of Hall on the Wings Fan Appreciation Day.

Mundorf led the Wings with a pair of goals and four assists while Buchanan and Hall each scored twice.  The Wings held the league’s leading scorer, Garrett Billings, to a pair of assists.  Brandon Miller stopped 48 saves and picked up his 4,000th save in the victory.  The Wings can finish at 8-8 if they can win next weekend at Washington and could earn a home playoff game depending on how the Rochester Knighthawks finish their season.  As it is, the Wings can relax tonight knowing they have their ticket to the dance.

Wings earn split of weekend, end losing streak

By Tom Hoffman

The Philadelphia Wings needed a sense of urgency after losing their last five games.  Sunday they may have found it when they survived a poor second quarter and came back to defeat the Minnesota Swarm 15-13.  After Saturday night’s 14-7 loss on the road to the Rochester Knighthawks it would have been easy for the Wings to pack it in but after defeating the Swarm they may end up looking back on Sunday as the day that possibly saved their season.

“I think that’s probably one of the most emotional wins that we’ve had as long as I’ve been here,” Wings coach Johnny Mouradian said following the win Sunday.  Wings forward Kevin Crowley put it another way.

“Definitely feels like a weight’s been lifted off our shoulders,” Crowley said.

After going 5-3 through the season’s first half, the Wings had come up empty in the second half of the season.  Slow starts seemed to doom this team but that would not be the case against the Swarm as the Wings lead after the first quarter for only the second time this season.  However the Swarm took over the second stanza much the same way they owned the Wings in the second half in St. Paul just over a week ago outscoring the Wings 6-1 and scoring one of the ugliest goals possible when Jay Card fired from the hockey blue line with just under two seconds to play in the half and managed to put the shot past Wings goalie Brandon Miller to give the Swarm an 8-6 halftime lead and send bad vibes through the 6,861 in attendance.

On this day though, the second half would be owned by the Wings.  Crowley’s fourth straight goal would bring the Wings to within a goal before Drew Westervelt tied the game.  Paul Rabil gave the Wings the lead back before Minnesota scored two of the next three goals to send the game into the final 15 minutes tied at 10.  The Swarm would lead 12-11 with less than seven minutes to play before the Wings went on a game winning four goal run highlighted by two more Westervelt scores and goals from two unlikely sources, Kyle Hartzell (3rd of the season) and the first National Lacrosse League goal for Mike Manley.  Minnesota’s Kiel Matisz scored with 3:39 left in regulation and :25 after the goal the Swarm had a golden opportunity to get within a goal after Rabil was sent to the penalty box for holding.  But the Wings, who had given up six extra man goals to the Swarm, would kill off the penalty and hold on for the victory.

Crowley and Westervelt each tallied four goals and four assists Sunday and for Crowley, it felt a lot better than Saturday did in Rochester when he hit almost as many posts.
“I’m tired of hitting posts,” Crowley said.

Miller made 37 saves in net and had a solid second half after letting up the long distance goal right before halftime.  With two games remaining, the Wings would likely have to win at least one to secure a spot in the 2013 playoffs while a pair of wins (and some help) could earn the Wings their first home postseason match since 2002.

Jeff Reynolds Catches Up With LaxPhilly

In an Exclusive for LaxPhilly.com, Kevin M. Neibauer caught up with Wings face off specialist ans transition player, Jeff Reynolds...

KMN-"What was your injury and are you fully recovered?
JR-"I injured my ankle against Colorado the first time we played them in February. I rolled my left ankle. It's still sore however the Wings staff has done nice job in my recovery and I only had to miss two weeks. Once I got back into the line up, I actually received a concussion against Toronto. Luckily we had a bye the following week, so I'm good to go and have been cleared by the staff.

KMN-"How long have you been with the team?"
JR- This will be more 4th year.

KMN-"Who do you consider some of the best face-off guys in the league?"
JR-'It would be both of the Snider brothers. They're quick on the whistle, have great technique and do a nice job possessing the ball once they have it.'

KMN-"Season winding down, how big will it be getting Brendan Mundorf back?"
JR-" It's great having Mundy back in the lineup. He's obviously a great player, but he adds a different dynamic to the offense. He's extremely tough, quick and very difficult to defend by yourself, which should bode well for us during the second half of the season.

KMN-"Max Seibald and Brodie Merrill, any time frame for their return?"

JR-I can't really speak for Max, but Brodie has been feeling good and is currently back in the lineup. Losing both of those guys is tough, but that's a natural part of the game and we have to learn to react."

KMN-"Rochester on Saturday, travel back to Philly for Sunday afternoon game, two teams that need wins, How big is this weekend?"

JR-"This is an extremely important weekend for us. It's a tremendous opportunity to get ourselves back on track and establish some confidence heading into the final part of the season."

KMN-"Brandon Miller is having a great season, does that take a lot of pressure off of having to win the face-offs?"
JR- " Brandon has been doing a great job, however as a defensive player, it's our responsibility to make his life easier. Whenever we have the opportunity to get possessions and get the offense on the field, we want to make sure we capitalize on those opportunities. The defense has shown moments of brilliance this year, but at the same time we have struggled during some stretches, if that's the case, face-off wins prove to be that much more important".

KMN-"The Philly crowd, What is it like to play in front of them?"
JR-"Playing in front of the Philly fans is great. They're passionate, excited, and always looking for a good time. We owe it to them to give them a better home record, so hopefully we can make that happen this Sunday.”

My View on Sports Related Concussions.

By- Kevin M. Neibauer

Let me start out by stating that I am not a medical professional nor a person who is well versed in Concussions.

With that being stated. I was pondering the world of concussions and the evolution of the awareness of the risk and damage.

Being a half a century old, I have been a sports fans for over forty years, not just Philly sports, but sports in general. I vividly remember the Broad Street Bullies, The Big Red Machine, Larry Bird, The Steel Curtain and the list goes on.

What strikes me is the differences then and now, some clear, some subtle. Injuries in sports ar as old as the sports themselves. the nature of injuries seems, at least to me, directly correlated to the amount of equipment or, protection worn by the participants.

Allow me to start the diatribe as simply as this...medical personnel and experts all are cautioning everyone about the "hazards" of concussions.

To me, this is a new phenomenom. In the 70's, rarely did one see a hockey player brandishing a "helmet". In fact, even goaltenders did not don them, or in fact any type of facial protection, such as a mask. I remember one Philadelphia Flyer, Ross Lonsberry wearing a helmet. His reasoning?

He was balding and very vain about losing his hair and wore the helmet to cover his baldness. Only a handful of players ever thought about wearing a helmet. To me, this is when the game changed.

The influx of European players, who typically wore helmets, along with the advent of "eye shields", crept in and induced a growing lack of regard for the need to keep the stick "on the ice".

Helmets, which were intended to help the game, for me, brought about a certain callous attitude about the safety of others.

As the sport has grown to become a viable marketable commodity with players being bought and sold like stocks, and those players increasing in height, weight, strength, and body mass, the game has now become much more risky. More equipment, more rules, more concussions.

Football is the sport that one would expect the obvious, huge bodies crashing into huge bodies...concussions would occur. Again, more and more protective equipment. Once again, more and more injuries.

Baseball...the oddest of them all. For nearly two centuries, catchers and home plate umpires have had facial protection. In the beginning, needless to say, very primitive. As technology evolved, the catcher's mask evolved into a beautiful protective device.

The casual observer sees a catcher or umpire get hit with a thrown or batted ball and reels in horror when the mask flies off or gets twisted sideways. Bottom line, that means the device worke dlike a charm, they are designed to deflect the concussion of the hit of the cranium and into the padding and as a result, deflect the blow by ejecting itself away from the area.

Here in the 21st century, what do catcher's and umpire's (I am guilty) choose for the head protection? More and more, it is the hockey style goalie helmet. Unless the individual has it custom made, it is nearly as risky as going behind the plate with zero protection.

To show the irony of the world we live in. We watch and cheer wildly for two sporst which the same doctor's who warn against the dangers of concussion sit, within blood range and scream their well educated faces off.

Boxing and Ultimate Fighting. Only protection donned by the participants? A cup...no head gear....

So, my point may be made right there. The more protection you wear, the less protection you have....

Max Seibald vs Kevin Neibauer

In an exclusive to LaxPhilly.com Max Seibald took time out to chat with Kevin M. Neibauer about his injury, the team and chemistry....

KMN-"When do you plan on coming back from the injury?" "What was the nature of the injury?'
MS- "Broke my 5th metatarsal and needed to get surgery. Return date still TBD".

KMN-"How much of an impact do you think you make when you join forces with Paul Rabil?"

MS- "Im just as interested to see as you. We played very well together on Team USA in 2010, but the outdoor game is very different."

KMN-"Despite not being able to participate in practices and games, how much imput do you have on team matters?"

MS- "Not much. Hard to have much of a say on whats going on day to day if you cant go out on the field and back it up or be in their shoes to know what is going on with the team on and off the field and on road trips."

KMN-"Every team has injuries during the season, the Wings in particular have been hit pretty hard. How does a team prepare for that adversity?"

MS- "Not much you can do to prepare for injuries. It happens every year to every team. The Wings have obviously had some bad luck this season with a number of injuries this season, but the team is more than just a few players. There is a large and deep group of committed players, coaches, and owners that have put in a ton of time from training camp, practices, film breakdown, etc. so that even with some bad luck and injuries, the team is still put in a great position to succeed."
KMN-"You play in the MLL, will the injury impact that at all?"

MS- "Still TBD."

KMN-"Favorite NLL city to play in?'
MS- "Philly for sure. Other than the home field, I love playing in Denver and in Toronto."
KMN-"Rochester has had the Wings number for a few years. With playoffs approaching, how much does the prospect of facing them affect the team?"

MS- "In this league, on any given night, any team can beat any team. Its just a matter of putting in the time to prepare, and executing on game day."

KMN-"What are your thoughts on the play of Paul Rabil and his ability to adjust to the box game?'

MS-"He is a great player, who has good size, athleticism and strength along with a great stick and understanding of the game. With that and his desire to win he will continue to fulfill his role with the Wings which makes the rest of the team better.'

KMN-"A lot was made of the American team ideal that was presented by the Wings....was it a lot of hype? What was the mindset behind that?"

MS- " I don't believe it is hype, I think we have a talented group of players who bring a different element of speed, strength, and pure athleticism to the floor that many other teams can't match, and is a little different than the traditional indoor lacrosse style of play. Its a matter of staying healthy, utilizing our strengths to our advantage, and continuing to build on team chemistry."

I want to thank Max Seibald for his generous cooperation !!!

Wings fans will remember a guy who came on the scene known as " Bill Bergey's Kid"...in a short time, the kid became a Wings icon....it is my pleasure to present Jake Bergey...
Kevin M.Neibauer had the chance to chat with Jake Bergey....

KMN- Tell us what you have been up to since you left the Wings?

JB-" I have been busy with my full time job in the medical sales field.  Between that and my two kids, there
is not a whole lot of free time.  I do however enjoy every minute with them."

KMN- Coaching, How was that experience?

JB-" Coaching was a learning experience.  I think I learned as much as the players did.  I realize how much time my coaches really put in over the years."

KMN-What is the future of the Wings?

JB- "I m not really sure.  I know there was talk about trying to add teams, but I need to see what the future holds"

KMN- Do you see yourself continuing to Coach ?

JB-"I will be coaching at some level for as long as I can see.  My son is now playing lacrosse, but my passion is the indoor game.  I would love if there was Box lacrosse leagues for young kids that was true box lacrosse."

KMN- You had an Wings staff in Reading...does that make it more enjoyable?

JB-"Absolutely,  I worked with Tom  Slate who is one of my best friends. He has quite a bit of coaching experience so I learned a lot from him, as well as enjoyed talking about it over a beer after the games and practice.."

KMN-Many of  the guys that you with and against, have moved to the NLL as coaches (Troy Cordingly, Bob Hamley, Tom Ryan, Thomas Hajek)...do you plan on joining them?

JB-" I would love to say yes, but I doubt it.  With my job, I do not have the freedom of getting away so often and would be tough to do.  I will never say never though."

KMN- Favorite game as a Wing?

JB- "So many to pick from, but the 2 that stick out in my mind the most was my first pro game.  It was a win in Buffalo.  I was pretty overwhelmed but did end up having 2 goals.  The second was the championship game where we beat Toronto on their home field. Not many people gave us a shot but that was special.".

KMN-You are still greeted warmly by the fans when you come to games, what was it like to play in Philadelphia?

JB-" People ask me when I go to games if I miss playing.  My answer is yes, but what I think I miss the most is them announcing my name hearing the crowd cheer and running out in front of all those screaming fans.  I love every Philly Wings fan and cannot thank them enough for the support they gave me.  I am so glad I played my whole career in Philly because I would not have wanted to be anywhere else."

Thanks Jake, we will post it to www.LaxPhilly.com

Wings still winless in second half after falling to Rock

By Tom Hoffman
Success in the second half of recent seasons has eluded the Philadelphia Wings and so far that trend seems to be continuing this season as well.  After today’s 13-8 loss at home to the Toronto Rock the Wings have lost both games since starting the latter half of the 2013 season.  And the score was not anywhere as close as it would suggest.
After Toronto opened the scoring just 55 seconds in, Ned Crotty tied the game for the Wings which would be as close as they would get all afternoon.  Toronto scored the game’s next three goals to lead 4-1 after the first quarter.  Following a Paul Rabil goal the Rock would then increase their lead to 7-2 before goals from Kevin Ross and Drew Westervelt cut the deficit to 7-4.  The Wings issue on this day was stopping Josh Sanderson which they had little success in doing.  Sanderson had four goals on the day, all in the first half and the Rock led at the half 9-5.
The second half was very low scoring as each team tallied just once in the third.  Kyle Belton scored twice in the fourth (three for the game) and Scott Johnston added the final score for the Rock to go up 13-6 before Kevin Crowley scored a pair of meaningless goals after Rock coach Troy Cordingley replaced starter Nick Rose for the game’s final two minutes.
For the Wings they now have a week off before starting back to back weekends of back to back games.
Wings Lose to Toronto, 13-8

By- Kevin M. Neibauer

My spin on Saturday's matinee against the First Place Toronto Rock...Toronto is led by the ageless, Colin Doyle and perhaps the best goaltender in the National Lacrosse League, Nick Rose.

In what was probably the closest blowout that I have witnessed, Toronto prevailed with a 13-8 victory at the Wells Fargo Center.

The Wings were led offensively by Kevin Crowley who notched 4 goals and added an assist. Crowley had the distinction of scoring not one, but two buzzer beater goals.

Paul Rabil continues to improve and Drew Westervelt matched Rabil's three point afternoon.

Brandon Miller was once again very strong in the net making 38 saves. The goaltender battle between Miller and Nick Rose of the Rock was won this time, by Rose.

Rose was absolutely the player of the game and will no doubt take home the goaltender of the week award.
Rose made it look easy stopping 45 shots. The Philadelphia shot selection was vastly improved which made the Rose accomplishment even more impressive.

Philadelphia continued the trend of falling behind early and having to battle back. Trailing 4-1 after the first period it seemed as though things would get ugly again. The Wings kept battling and were not really outplayed. Josh Sanderson notched four first half goals and that would be the difference at halftime.

Kevin Crowley notched his first buzzer beater with .02 second remaining on the clock and the outcome still seemed in doubt.

The third quarter saw the Wings start strong scoring two quick goals. The bad karma returned when the home town team hit two posts in a one minute span.

The posts would be hit twice more and the karma would continue. Toronto's Damon Edwards took a five minute penalty for a brutal hit on Jeff Reynolds. As Coach Mouradian would point out after the contest, "We absolutely have to get two or three goals on that man up."

Not only did they NOT get the two or three goals, they actually gave up a shorthanded goal. That goal, the second shorthanded goal of the game seemed to signal the end. A wild flurry by Toronto would increase the lead to blow out proportions.

Crowley made it 13-8 with a second buzzer beater to end the bizarre afternoon.

WINGS THINGS- Rose came out of the game with about two minutes remaining and Zack Boychuk was tagged with the final two Wings goals.

Brett Manney, Brodie Merrill and Brendan Mundorf remain injured. Jeff Reynolds returned and made a huge difference on the faceoffs. Reynolds seemed to be stunned from the cheapshot and no prognosis has been made as to his status.

New addition, Angus Dineley was the back up to Miller. Mike Thompson did not dress.

Seen at the postgame party were Scott Gabrielson, Jake Bergey and former Philadelphia Eagle, John Spagnola.

The Wings have another bye week next week and returning to two road games in two nights, Minnesota then Colorado..

Interview With Athan Iannucci

One On One....

Kevin M. Neibauer caught up with former Wings superstar, Athan Iannucci. The Washington Stealth forward returned to Philadelphia for the first time since being traded a few seasons ago.

Iannucci, spoke candidly about his team's peformance, returning to Philadelphia and filled us in on what caused his trade. In a LaxPhilly exclusive, One on One...

KMN-Your first trip back to Philly...your thoughts?
AI-"Just getting off the plane, I said, I remember this place. I liked this city, I had a lot of fun here. Good memories.."

KMN-"The trade....care to talk about what generated it?"
AI-"It was a little personality conflict between myself and John Mouradian. He was the GM and we didn't along too well. When he made himself head coach and GM, I wasn't really surprised when it happened. "

KMN- A lot of speculation went around, so let me ask, "Was there a rift between you and Geoff Snider?"
AI-"I don't know, I Think we're both competitors and we both get a little bit fired up in the heat of battle.

There was definately times when we got at each other a bit. But, overall, I have respect for him and I like think he has some respect for me. It was a love/hate relationship at times but, I think he is a good player and I wish him luck."

KMN-"Getting back to Mouradian, any idea why you and him didn't get along?"
AI- "Uh...no comment...actually, there were some things that happened that maybe some other people would say, ok.. I just didn't agree with the morality or philosophy of the situation and I chose to speak up. Sometimes being that guy doesn't work out in your favor, but I stand by what I said."

KMN-"Mouradian was upset in the press conference. He feels that your team was gooning it up."
AI-"He's an emotional guy, it's an emotional game. They had some players on their team that were taking dives, a couple dirty shots. A game like lacrosse or hockey, where's there fighting, sometimes you gotta answer the bell if you are gonna play that way. Like I said, its an emotional game, that happens sometimes.
Crowd loves it, classic Philly."

KMN-"After the fracas, Matty Roik came in, what was going on with that?
AI-"You don't know things are going to go, right. Our goaltender has been playing well, we wanted to keep him out of the penalty box and keep him from getting in trouble."

KMN- "That's a big win for your team..."
AI-"Absolutely, its like our fourth win a row, building confidence. We don't want to looking to string wins together at the end of the year...let's get them now."

Thank You to Athan Iannucci and the Washington Stealth for their cooperation.

Wings sloppy in loss to Stealth

By Tom Hoffman

They never did it as the Albany Attack nor did they do it while in San Jose.  But last night the Washington Stealth finally did what their predecessors could not, win a game in Philadelphia.  The Stealth got plenty of help from a Wings team that did not look like a team that had won its last three games as the Wings sloppy play aided the Stealth in their 16-10 victory at the Wells Fargo Center.

While the Wings were without Brett Manney, Jeff Reynolds and Brodie Merrill, they seemed to start off fine as they held an early 2-1 lead following goals from Jordan Hall and Mike McLellan.  The Stealth would tie the game on a shorthanded goal that had Wings keeper Brandon Miller looking like Ron Hextall against Claude Lemieux when Rhys Duch unleashed the NLL version of a blue line slap shot that was able to elude Miller.  That goal started a run for Washington that would see them score nine of the next ten goals and take a 10-3 halftime lead and making this game look much like their blowout home losses to Calgary and Rochester.
“We just broke down, especially that 2nd quarter,” Wings coach Johnny Mouradian said.  “We just broke down completely.”

The second half was a little more even but the Wings could never get close to the Stealth as a number of power play opportunities were squandered.  The Wings would score three goals with the extra man but allowed five shorthanded scores to Washington.  One SHG that was quite frustrating was the one scored by the Stealth’s Justin Salt 8:22 into the 3rd after Kevin Crowley managed to hit the post twice during the Wings previous possession.  Mouradian was not impressed with how the Wings managed time during their man up situations.
“We didn’t manage the clock in our end really well,” Mouradian said.

The game would end with a mini brawl with 72 seconds left to play that did not leave the Wings side happy but their overall play on this night would have done that by itself.  While the Wings did get goals out of players like McLellan, Joel White, Pat Heim and Kyle Sweeney, it was the main goal scorers who were invisible for most of the night.
“We’ve gotta get goals out of guys that have to score goals,” Mouradian said.

The Wings (5-4) will now have to regroup and get ready for the first place Toronto Rock when they come to town for a Saturday matinee.

Lax day in Philly

By Tom Hoffman

Today there may be some snow on the ground but tomorrow calls for some Spring-like temps, perfect weather for a day of lacrosse in the Philadelphia area.  The Inside Lacrosse Independence Classic, sponsored by Whitman’s Sampler, will take place at PPL Park in Chester, PA.  For college lax enthusiasts this is heaven before the NCAA Championships as three games will take place.  And to complete the day of lacrosse in Philly will be the National Lacrosse League showdown between the Philadelphia Wings and the Washington Stealth at 8 PM at the Wells Fargo Center.
The day will start with a Big East matchup between St. John’s and Syracuse at Noon.  The Red Storm (3-1) will look to get some revenge following their loss to the Orange (2-1) in last year’s Big East Championship game at Villanova.  Syracuse has won two straight since their season opening loss to Albany and will look to stay perfect against St. John’s.  The second matchup at 2:30 will be a local matchup as the surprising Penn Quakers (3-1) will face off against the Villanova Wildcats (1-3).  Penn has already equaled their win total from the 2012 season and will look to continue their hot start while Villanova will seek to rebound from Tuesday’s 14-11 loss to Princeton.  The final game of the tripleheader will feature Penn State (2-2) and Lehigh (3-3) at 5 PM.  Both teams will be looking to stay in the USILA rankings which will make this an intriguing matchup.
Tickets are still available for both the Independence Classic and the Wings-Stealth game.
